A deficiency of iron causes a disease called Anemia. It means “no blood" in Greek. Anemia can be caused by several reasons. Some reasons include not eating enough foods containing iron, conditions wherein large amounts of blood is lost, i.e. heavy menstrual cycles, internal bleeding, ulcers, prolonged illness, uterine fibroids, etc. One specific type of anemia called Pernicious Anemia is caused by the lack of Vitamins B6 and/ or B12.

About Iron absorption: The stomach must have a significant amount of hydrochloric acid for iron to absorbed. Copper, manganese, molybdenum, and vitamins A, B complex vitamins are also needed for maximum absorption. Iron found in meat is called heme iron. It is much more readily absorbed into the body than iron from plant sources. Vitamin C foods eaten or vitamin C supplement taken with iron can increase absorption significantly. This is why you may see iron supplements including Vitamin C.

**Note: There are rare instances of excessive iron intake. High amounts of iron stored in the body increases free radicals in the body.

Many people who are deficient in iron sometimes are diagnosed as having a heart problems. This is because the heart tries to make up for the lack of oxygen transported by red blood cells by increasing the heart rate. Remember the heart is responsible for taking oxygen to every cell throughout the entire body. Without oxygen cells will die.

Imagine how out exhausted and tired you would be after running up a flight of stairs. You’d probably be gasping for oxygen. The same thing happens inside your body. The heart tries to do it’s job of getting oxygen to the cells gasping for air. When they don’t get enough oxygen they and you feel tired and exhausted. Getting more oxygen to the cells will energize you.
